Real Madrid slipped to defeat at the Benito Villamarín. The Whites were dominant in the opening exchanges and after just ten minutes they took the lead. A fantastic team move, saw Mbappé receive the ball with his back to the ball and surrounded by defenders. The striker spun around, drove to the edge of the box and delivered an inch-perfect pass between the lines for Mendy to reach. The full-back was one-on-one with Adrián and pulled back for Brahim, who slotted home.

As the game went on, Real Madrid were solid defensively, but Betis equalised from a corner kick. Isco swung in the corner in the 33rd minute and Johnny headed home from inside the six-yard box. With the score at 1-1 and the rain lashing down, the home side almost took the lead on the stroke of half-time from another corner. Again it was Isco who floated the ball into the box and Johnny's header was deflected off Tchouameni, forcing Courtois into a reflex save.



Things got difficult after the interval. Isco converted a penalty after Rüdiger had fouled Jesús Rodríguez in the 54th minute. Madrid went in search of an equaliser, and 13 minutes later the hosts had the chance to make it 3-1 when Cucho Hernández was one-on-one with the keeper but he fired wide. On 80', Endrick almost found an equaliser, but his shot from inside the area went wide, and three minutes later Vini Jr. had an attempt at a shot from the edge of the area saved by Adrián. From there until the end, Ancelotti's men searched relentlessly, at least, for an equaliser, but it didn't come.
