Madrid beat Girona with a wonder goal from Modrić and another from Vini Jr.

1 week(s)

Real Madrid are not giving up any ground to Barcelona and Atlético in the fight for the league title. Ancelotti's side beat Girona and rounded off a fantastic week at the Bernabéu which saw them secure qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League with a comfortable win over Manchester City on Wednesday. Captain Modrić opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time with a spectacular goal from 25 yards and Vini Jr. sealed the win in the 83rd minute thanks to an Mbappé assist. Three important points that leave the title race too close to call, with our team and Barcelona on level points with Atlético a point further behind.

A frenetic first half soon produced chances with the first moments of danger within the opening five minutes, with two great chances at either end. Courtois made a fine save from Arnau's shot when it looked like the ball was going out of play, while Mbappé had a great chance on the counterattack - Vini Jr.’s fine linkup play put his teammate in on goal with a beautiful backheel, but an inspired Gazzaniga pushed the shot away for a corner. It was the first attempt on goal for Ancelotti's side, who began to threaten the visitors' area with increasing regularity.  In the 16th minute, Vini Jr. found himself inside the six-yard box but he headed over from Mbappé’s cross. Brahim tried his luck twelve minutes later, finding himself with little space on the touchline, but after feigning to cross, he instead fired a powerful shot that forced Gazzaniga into a smart save.

A goal from the captain
The minutes passed and after half an hour came another brilliant save from Courtois, this time preventing a Van de Beek shot inside the area. And just when it looked like the half would end goalless, Modrić popped up in the 41st minute. The Croatian chested down a defender's header from a corner and lifted the Bernabéu crowd off their seats with a spectacular shot from 25 yards that left Gazzaniga helpless. A wonder strike from the captain.

Vini Jr. hits the crossbar
It was the same story after the break. Our team continued to threaten the opposition area and their dominance almost produced the second goal of the afternoon with two long-range shots from Lucas Vázquez and Vini Jr. in the 52nd and 58th minutes respectively, with the former flashing centimeters wide of the Girona goal and the latter rattling the crossbar.

Our team barely gave their opponents a chance and continued to string together dangerous moves. Vini Jr. unleashed a shot from inside the box in the 74th minute after a solo run but it went over the bar and eight minutes later Gazzaniga got the better of Mbappé in a one-on-one. The match was still very much alive, but in the 83rd minute, Vini Jr. got the second. The goal came about from a slick combination with Mbappé, with precise interplay first from the Brazilian and then back to the Frenchman, whose assist into space allowed his teammate to score with a first-time finish. Ancelotti's side have picked up three more points in the fight for the league.
