Defeat in London

2 week(s)

Real Madrid lost 3-0 to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium and will now play for their place in the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday 16 April at the Santiago Bernabéu. The game got underway with Mbappé's long-range effort, but the ball ended up in David Raya's gloves. Arsenal hit back with 13 minutes gone, when Partey tried his luck from the edge of the box but Courtois saved comfortably. With half an hour on the clock, Madrid enjoyed the best chance of the first half when Bellingham threaded a perfect ball in behind for Mbappé, who raced through against Raya but was unable to beat the hosts' shot-stopper. In injury time at the end of the first period, Courtois made an impressive double save, first getting down well to parry Rice's close-range header, before leaping to his feet to repel Martinelli's follow-up.

The half-time break came around with the scores at 0-0, and Mbappé was again first to threaten when the teams remerged for the second period. Bellingham linked up nicely with the Frenchman in the box, but his attempt ended up in the side-netting with 50 minutes played. Eight minutes later, Arsenal were ahead through Declan Rice's long-range free-kick. The opener drove the hosts on, and they could have doubled their lead with a triple chance ten minutes later. Courtois brilliantly kept out Martinelli's shot, Alaba got back on the line to clear Merino's resulting effort, and Courtois was on hand once again to turn Rice's strike behind.

There was nothing the Real Madrid goalkeeper could do on 70’ though, as Rice unleashed another fierce free-kick that flew into the top corner. Two set-pieces, both taken by Rice, meant the hosts were two up now. Then, with 75 minutes on the clock, it was three, as Merino found space in the box and placed a precise finish into the bottom corner. Real Madrid looked to cut the deficit in response but the score remained the same until the final whistle, and Camavinga was given his marching orders for a second yellow card in injury time.
